Britain's Noise Nuisance ITV | What Can Be Done To Reduce Noise Problems

Posted by Magnet on Jan 20, 2011 12:00:00 AM | Uncategorised
Namely, that noise can be detrimental to health and that something needs to be done about it.

How noise nuisance is a big problem across the uk

The UK is in the midst of a huge infrastructure upgrade right now and it’s more than likely that you only have to step outside your front door to find a building site or a utilities works upgrade programme happening near you. No doubt you’ve had to hold your hands to your ears to soften the impact of the pneumatic drill as you walk past a gas main replacement, or have felt a headache for hours afterwards due to the constant banging nearby. You might be so unlucky to have rail engineering works screeching through the night or plant rumbling as you’re trying to sleep.
There are cost effective noise reduction solutions out there which are being used to great success on projects across the UK and worldwide and there should be no excuse for excluding noise reduction from the specification or the site management plans.

Educating the construction industry about noise reduction

Since we launched in 2010, the Echo Barrier team have been working hard to educate the construction sector and local authorities that noise reduction solutions should be an integral part of any project management plan.

Integrating Noise Reduction Products

Not only does integrating noise reduction products into site management safeguard the health of employees and of the local communities in which the noise is being made, but simply, by putting up noise barriers, local people, clients and potential customers have an immediate positive opinion of a company trying to reduce it’s inconvenient impact by working in a considerate manner. For many years now we’ve seen stories in the press about local people who have complained about the noise being emitted from local building/infrastructure projects. A recent BBC documentary looked at the M6 upgrade works in the North West and the months of stress and sleepless nights suffered by local residents. Noise reduction solutions hadn’t been a huge priority for the Highways Agency or the contractor, and local people were campaigning to find out why. The huge Crossrail project in London is also another which has drawn attention due to the noise created and the proximity to homes, retail outlets and offices.

Noise Nuisance Problems on ITV

The ‘Britain’s noise nuisance’ documentary looked specifically at plans for expansion at Heathrow and the fears felt by those living nearby about the impact that the building work is going to have on their lives, not to mention the increase in aircraft traffic.
Since the country has emerged from the recession, the number of building and infrastructure projects across the UK has risen dramatically and will continue to increase over the next few years, bringing misery to those effected by the noise created as a result. In our experience and based on projects such as London Underground station refurbishments, we know that on the whole, the public understand that these projects are needed and are in support of them.
Some organisations have worked closely with us to integrate noise reduction solutions and have enjoyed positive feedback, increased projects and return business as a result, not to mention projects without a single complaint throughout the duration of the works. However, contractors who take liberties, who make huge amounts of noise and who continue banging and drilling outside of working hours and disturbing local residents, are the reason noise complaints to local authorities are currently at record levels.
Here at Echo Barrier we are committed to educating industry about the impacts of noise. We have worked closely with organisations such as Noise Action week and the Institute of Acoustics to communicate our messages and our vision for building sites of the future.
Through our marketing we are doing our best to explain the ‘why’ as well as the ‘what’ and the ‘when’ of noise reduction, and to work with contractors to safeguard the health of their employees and of local people.
Documentaries such as these are a great way of increasing the exposure of our cause and educating people about the impact of noise and of the noise reduction products that are available out there. We’re sure that as a result of this programme more pressure will be put on large contractors, specifiers and Local Authorities to take noise seriously and do something about it.
The health of our nation is at risk if they don’t. To find out more about our range of lightweight, weatherproof and flexible noise barriers and acoustic enclosures click on the products page. If you have any questions about our products or would like to trial them on a site please do call us on the number on the home page.
