New legislation gives City a chance to sleep

New York City has always been known as a melting pot of people and noise. But now the city that never sleeps is being given some peace and quiet with the introduction of new legislation that will aim to restrict overnight and weekend construction noise. The new measure will allow inspectors to take noise readings from the street rather than being restricted to a complainant’s property. It will also require construction companies to electronically file noise mitigation plans making them easily accessible to both inspectors and the public.

Why is this important? In short New York is getting louder . Back in 2016, there were around 420,000 noise complaints lodged with the city’s 311 line and that number is currently only increasing. The new legislation, signed by New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio In January, will give new powers to noise inspectors allowing them to serve “stop-work” orders for noisy equipment as well as lowering the allowable after-hours noise limit in residential areas.

Living in the City that never sleeps In a city as densely populated as New York, reducing noise is a challenging task and it is hoped that the introduction of the new rules will go some way to creating a more peaceful environment. As consistent noise begins to creep in to the residential districts of New York, legislation like this will help to future proof the expansion of the city.
